-- COPY PROGRAMS --

As everyone should know by now,
there are a LOT of very good programs
available for the 64--Games, Word
processors, Utilities, Database
Managers, Spreadsheets, etc. Most of
these programs are copy-protected in
one way or another, and if you're like
me, you HATE to have to use the MASTER
DISK every time you want to run the
program, since you just KNOW that,
sooner or later, the disk will crash
and you'll have to wait for a period
(probably WEEKS) for a new copy to be
sent to you by the manufacturer. To
me, this seems to be cruel and unusual
punishment!
Since I didn't like this idea, I
investigated the few utilities on the
market for making backups of copy-
protected software.
I first purchased THE CLONE
MACHINE with UNGUARD. This is a very
nice package that allows you to not
only copy protected software, it's
also a track and sector editor, will
perform disk directory functions, and
much, much more. When I first got it,
I was very pleased with the way the
program worked and all the power that
it gave me. I was a bit unhappy with
the slow speed, however. The loader/
menu program appears to be in machine
code, but the modules loaded from the
menu are in BASIC, so the program runs
very slowly. Even so, it still does
the job in most cases. It WON'T back
up the newer stuff from SYNAPSE
(ZAXXON, SENTINAL, SLAMBALL) and it
won't back up ELECTRONIC ARTS stuff.
TCM/UNGUARD DOES allow you to use
either one or two disk drives (8&9),
and, in general, seems well thought
out (you can edit a sector in either
HEX or ASCII, for example), but quite
slow.
Well, I used TCM/UNGUARD for
awhile, making backups of all my
protected software that I could but
wished for something else that would
work as well, but faster. Well, I
found it in the DI-SECTOR package.
This package does just about all that
TCM/UNGUARD will do (it won't allow
you to use two drives to copy the
protected stuff, but it seems to do
everything else and quite a bit more).
