  10.      As everyone should know by now,
  11.  
  12. there are a LOT of very good programs
  13.  
  14. available for the 64--Games, Word
  15.  
  16. processors, Utilities, Database
  17.  
  18. Managers, Spreadsheets, etc.  Most of
  19.  
  20. these programs are copy-protected in
  21.  
  22. one way or another, and if you're like
  23.  
  24. me, you HATE to have to use the MASTER
  25.  
  26. DISK every time you want to run the
  27.  
  28. program, since you just KNOW that,
  29.  
  30. sooner or later, the disk will crash
  31.  
  32. and you'll have to wait for a period
  33.  
  34. (probably WEEKS) for a new copy to be
  35.  
  36. sent to you by the manufacturer.  To
  37.  
  38. me, this seems to be cruel and unusual
  39.  
  40. punishment!
  41.  
  42.      Since I didn't like this idea, I
  43.  
  44. investigated the few utilities on the
  45.  
  46. market for making backups of copy-
  47.  
  48. protected software.
  49.  
  50.      I first purchased THE CLONE
  51.  
  52. MACHINE with UNGUARD.  This is a very
  53.  
  54. nice package that allows you to not
  55.  
  56. only copy protected software, it's
  57.  
  58. also a track and sector editor, will
  59.  
  60. perform disk directory functions, and
  61.  
  62. much, much more.  When I first got it,
  63.  
  64. I was very pleased with the way the
  65.  
  66. program worked and all the power that
  67.  
  68. it gave me.  I was a bit unhappy with
  69.  
  70. the slow speed, however.  The loader/
  71.  
  72. menu program appears to be in machine
  73.  
  74. code, but the modules loaded from the
  75.  
  76. menu are in BASIC, so the program runs
  77.  
  78. very slowly.  Even so, it still does
  79.  
  80. the job in most cases.  It WON'T back
  81.  
  82. up the newer stuff from SYNAPSE
  83.  
  84. (ZAXXON, SENTINAL, SLAMBALL) and it
  85.  
  86. won't back up ELECTRONIC ARTS stuff.
  87.  
  88. TCM/UNGUARD DOES allow you to use
  89.  
  90. either one or two disk drives (8&9),
  91.  
  92. and, in general, seems well thought
  93.  
  94. out (you can edit a sector in either
  95.  
  96. HEX or ASCII, for example), but quite
  97.  
  98. slow.
  99.  
  100.      Well, I used TCM/UNGUARD for
  101.  
  102. awhile, making backups of all my
  103.  
  104. protected software that I could but
  105.  
  106. wished for something else that would
  107.  
  108. work as well, but faster.  Well, I
  109.  
  110. found it in the DI-SECTOR package.
  111.  
  112. This package does just about all that
  113.  
  114. TCM/UNGUARD will do (it won't allow
  115.  
  116. you to use two drives to copy the
  117.  
  118. protected stuff, but it seems to do
  119.  
  120. everything else and quite a bit more).
